Welcome to Luckley House School

Offering day and flexible boarding provision for pupils aged 11 to 18 years. The School is set in attractive grounds with excellent facilities, and at just 40 miles from London, is the perfect location for boarders. Our uniqueness lies in the combination of our size, Christian ethos and flexibility to meet the needs of individual pupils and their families. We provide a distinctly academic education that is tailored to the individual needs of each pupil. This is offered in the context of a broad curriculum which celebrates the arts and sports, as much as academic achievement.

Every single school takes huge pride in the top performers in every cohort of young people. In late August we become preoccupied by how many A and A* grades have been achieved by groups of pupils across the country, at both A Level and GCSE level. It is good to applaud the efforts of those young people and to admire their achievements. I am sure we will always look up to those who have achieved high academic results, in much the same way we enjoy seeing elite sports people and enjoy the performances of accomplished actors and musicians. It is also good to encourage young people to aim high and strive for the best.

At the same time, we must remember the fact that we are not all top academic performers, just as we are not all elite sports performers or capable of producing astounding works of art. At the risk of coming out with a platitude, we are all different. However, in our measures of success of education, our society seems to be obsessed with defining success as a clutch of the highest grades with perhaps a great sporting record thrown in in the interests of balance. Surely this is too narrow, and even too simplistic a means of measuring success both on a pupil level and a school level. We need to consider the young people as they grow up. While we should recognise the achievements of those with the highest grades, we really must broaden our view of what success means for every individual. We all need to be successful, for ourselves and for the people around us. This is as much about what we do, as why we do it and how we can all thrive and contribute to society in the most positive way.

When a young person leaves Luckley, for whatever pathway they choose, we recognise their success. If they are properly equipped and full of excitement and enthusiasm for the next stage of their life, then they are already successful. For some, this may mean a clutch of the highest grades, but for others it will be a spread of grades in the exams. And these grades will not be the whole story, every young person will have learnt and developed along the way. For every list of grades there is a young person full of potential. As Head at Luckley, I look down the lists of results and rejoice as I know what went into every grade achieved. More than that, I see beyond the statistics to the truly unique young people who have grown up and achieved so much more than just those grades.

Testimonials

“We looked at Luckley house because we knew of the Head Teacher’s reputation, and because of the school’s Christian ethos and foundation. Every day since choosing Luckley House we have had cause to be thankful that we did so. The Pastoral care, is excellent, the school is neither too-big, nor too small, and the teaching is of a high standard – our son is engaged and enthusiastic. The Whitty Theatre was a big deciding factor, as were the school day-length: registration time, and flexible approach to Extended Day activities. The school environment is attractive, and feels secure. We felt there was a good atmosphere amongst and between staff and pupils when we visited. It was reassuring that many of the Governors and staff are Christians but also that the school seemed inclusive and welcoming. When our son recently had to have surgery and a protracted recovery, the school went out of its way to support us practically, and pastorally as a family.”

Parent testimonial

“To say that Luckley have gone above and beyond for me is an understatement. As a new student joining in Year 10 not knowing anyone, I was immediately met with the incredible support from not only pupils- but from the teachers too. Within a few days I knew that this school stood out from the rest; be this from breaking the traditional boundaries between year groups through common interests such as sport, music or drama; or knowing that in whatever area we focus on, we will get undivided attention and support; or from our phenomenal community. Luckley’s small community allows us to be seen as individuals. Teachers know exactly how we work, what extra support we need, and how best they can support us throughout our time here because they genuinely care about who we are and who we want to be. As a pupil in Year 13, knowing that I had the full support from teachers in my endeavours, was a massive confidence boost. I hope you can see through these few examples how Luckley supports every individual within the school, whether you join in Year 7 or Sixth Form, whether you want to become a police officer or a vet, or whether you excel in sports or academics- Luckley allows us to be ourselves.”

Academic

At Luckley we believe in creating a bespoke learning experience for each pupil, which recognises their strengths and uses these to maximise wider learning and academic achievement. A curriculum that both stretches and nurtures is key to all pupils reaching their potential, both in and out of the classroom. We consider learning a lifelong adventure that should develop pupils holistically, as people who wish to offer service to others, are of good character, want to make a positive difference, are confident, compassionate, courageous and who aim high!

Sixth Form

With a modern, purpose built Sixth Form study area, a dedicated and highly qualified team of teachers and an impressive record of securing first choice university places it is hardly surprising that the sixth form at Luckley is attracting more and more students from other schools. We pride ourselves on specialist, small-group teaching, with one-to-one support from tutors. You will be given the freedom to stretch yourself academically while learning to use time responsibly, just as you will need to do at university or in the workplace.

Boarding

Our aim is to provide a warm, supportive home for our boarders, in which friendships and social skills can be nurtured. We have a small boarding community and our boarding offer is very flexible to meet the individual needs of the modern family. We provide a home for both full and weekly boarders from the UK and overseas, and in addition, our flexi-boarding provision enables a number of our day students to regularly stay overnight. This is of great benefit for our families, particularly when parents have work or social commitments, or students themselves have an evening event at the school.
